One of the most stressful lawn weeds to deal with is dallisgrass. You can identify this weed by its circular, uneven clumps and long stems that grow up and out. If you walk over it, it can feel firmer compared to your turfgrass. It also has tiny black dots on the seed heads, like in the photo below.
Dallisgrass can spread quickly to the rest of your grass or your neighbor’s yards by birds, mowers, and the wind. Another issue is that the roots are so deep in the soil that pre-emergents can’t prevent it. It can be very frustrating for many homeowners.
If you end up with dallisgrass, you can treat it by digging up the entire root system of the weeds. This will leave holes in your yard that you’ll need to fill with soil. Alternatively, you can spray the center of the clumps with Roundup to kill them. You’ll have to be careful because Roundup will kill the surrounding grass, so don’t go overboard with it.
