With all the rain we’ve had lately, you might see some little mushrooms popping up in your lawn or landscape. These are not to be confused with harmful lawn fungus such as brown patch or root rot.
The fungi you see pop up when there’s been a lot of rain are actually always there! They stay in the soil and feed on organic material, without harming your grass. If it weren’t for these decomposers, fallen leaves and grass clippings would pile up on top of the lawn.
The mushrooms are the part of the fungus used for reproduction. There are usually many types of fungi in the area, which means the mushrooms can vary in shape, size, and color. It might seem concerning, but they aren’t bad for your lawn or landscape.
What can you do about them? Fungicide treatments for brown patch/root rot aren’t effective against this type of fungus. The best way to get rid of them is to mow over them with your lawn mower. The part of the mushroom that remains should dry out and shrivel up quickly. You can also just wait, and they’ll disappear on their own.
Overall, mushrooms in your grass are not a sign something is wrong with your yard. If you have any questions, let us know!
