Plant of the Week: American Holly

Happy Wednesday! Our plant of the week this week is Ilex opaca, also known as the American holly or the Christmas holly. The American holly is a broadleaf evergreen native to our area, as well as most of the United States. These hollies are large, growing up to 35 feet tall and 10 feet wide. They’re known for their bright red berries and spiky green leaves, which make them popular decorations during Christmastime. American holly berries are enjoyed by deer, birds, and other wildlife, and many types of songbirds build their nests in the branches.

These trees perform best in partial shade and slightly acidic, well-draining soil. Their berries will grow in winter, just in time for Christmas, and will produce flowers in spring. If you’re looking for a hardy evergreen for your landscape, consider the American holly!
