Video of laying mulch around tree
Summer is a great time to talk about the importance of mulch (and pine straw). It’s common in almost every flower bed… but what are the benefits of mulch?
Weeds: It helps prevent weeds by blocking sunlight from getting to weeds germinating underground. Your plants are already above the soil, so they’ll continue to soak up the sun without problem.
Moisture: A layer of mulch helps keep water in the soil and prevent it from evaporating as quickly as it would without it. This is especially helpful during the summer, and reduces the amount of water your plants need.
Temperature: Just like people use insulation to keep their homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter, mulch insulates your soil. During the summer, it protects your roots from scorching temperatures. In winter, mulch traps radiant heat and keeps your plants warm.
Aesthetics: Lastly, mulch looks nice! Having it in your beds makes your landscape look even and neat, hiding dropped leaves and other plant debris. Depending on the color you choose, it can also add a new dimension to your yard by complementing or contrasting your plants.
Pine straw instead of wooden mulch has the same benefits, so you can use either.
