Don’t Trim Hydrangeas

Right now, we’re seeing new growth on most hydrangeas. This means the plants should look healthy and happy during spring. We wanted to show this because during winter, hydrangeas look mostly bare, and you may be tempted to trim them back. Doing so now will cut off all of this season’s blooms, and you won’t have flowers anytime soon. It’s best to wait until after your hydrangea has dropped all their flowers for the season to do any trimming.

There are a few exceptions to this rule. Hydrangeas that bloom on new wood, like Limelight hydrangeas, can be pruned right now without damage. If you have any questions, let us know!
