Before the growing season for grass starts, we wanted to share some of our secrets to growing a healthy, green lawn.

Mowing: Mowing is often overlooked as just for aesthetics, but it’s incredibly important for healthy grass. Mowing once a week during the growing season encourages thicker, healthier grass growth by stimulating the development of new blades, which in turn helps to crowd out weeds and reduce the space for them to grow. This also helps prevent stress from having to cut off too much of the blade after a long period without mowing.
Watering: Grass needs one inch of water per week total. How long it takes to get that amount depends on the weather, makeup of your soil, shade/light locations, and more. If you want to know how long it takes for your yard to get 1 inch, put a measuring cup out and time how long it takes to fill up. It’s recommended to split that 1 inch over two watering sessions per week. Ex: It takes 30 min to get 1/2″ of water. Then you should water for 30 min, twice a week to get 1″ total.
Pre-emergents: Pre-emergent herbicides are the most reliable way to avoid having weeds in your yard. This type of herbicide prevents weeds from growing while they’re still underground, meaning they never breach the soil. Timing is important because you need to apply pre-emergents before the type of weed you’re preventing germinates. We’re currently applying pre-emergents that prevent summer weeds.
Fertilization: Fertilizer feeds the grass during the growing season and encourages it to grow stronger and faster. Depending on the time of year, fertilizer gives the grass essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
