If you have fall annuals in your garden right now, you might notice some wilting flowers or yellowing leaves. Pansies in particular have had a rough month and are struggling to thrive. Why is this happening?
Typically, we plant annuals in late October and early November, so their root systems have time to develop before it gets too cold. During this time, we usually have high temperatures in the late 60s and 70s, which annuals can handle.
Unfortunately, this year we had multiple days with highs in the 80s as late as November 19th. This is not normal and one of the main reasons plants are struggling. Fall annuals prefer mild weather and don’t tolerate heat.
If you notice yours are wilted, don’t panic! As we start to see cool weather consistently, many wilted plants will perk back up and look normal again. Continue to water properly and make sure your soil is draining well to avoid other types of stress in the meantime. Hopefully we’ll start to see healthy fall gardens soon.
