Weed Identification: Carolina geranium

Have you seen this weed in your lawn? This is Carolina geranium, a winter weed that’s native to our region. Each of its leaves has 5 main segments, and it develops white or pink flowers when it blooms. Carolina geranium can survive in conditions that would kill many other plants, as long as there’s water available.

You can prevent this weed from growing in your lawn by properly mowing, watering, and fertilizing your grass, as well as using well-timed pre-emergents in the fall. The good news is that if you have Carolina geranium in your grass (or other winter weeds), it’ll die off soon from summer temperatures.
