Ferns, in particular Boston Ferns, are almost a staple plant in the south. From front to back porches, in pots or my favorite, hanging for all to see, they just bring a look to your house like nothing else. To ensure you get the most out of your ferns we have put together a few basic tips to keep in mind:
1-Keep out of direct sunlight. Ferns tend to do much better when they are left in indirect sunlight or filtered sunlight. They are particularly prone to damage when they get a lot of evening sun.
2-Keep them watered. Ferns like humid environments. You need to make sure you are keeping them watered daily when possible. It is ok for the soil of the plants to remain damp since it is dry soil that is the number one killer of ferns. You can actually soak the entire plant once a month to make sure the peat moss that most are planted in is kept fully hydrated. If the leaves of your fern start to turn yellow it is because they need more water.
3-Don’t over feed the plant. Unlike most plants, ferns only need to be feed a few times a year. A simple 20-10-20 is perfect for them. Overfeeding can cause damage to the plant and make them prone to pest like spider mites and mealybugs. Treat as soon as possible if you see this.
These beautiful plants can be bought in several places across town. Some of our favorites are:
