Soil Temperatures

Do you know why the soil temperatures are so important?  Did you know weed germination is not based on the time of the year?   The germination is actually based on the temperature of the soil…the 4 inch deep temperature to be exact.  When the temperatures each around 55-60 degrees consistently it triggers the growth process.  Specifically with crab grass and as the temperatures rise others weeds follow in the process.  According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport our averages have been almost 55 degrees which means it is just a matter of time now.  You still have a few weeks to make a positive impact on the outcome of your lawn this year.  Even if you have waited to late, you can still stop the majority of the weeds.  Be proactive this year and apply a pre emergent to your lawn!
