One thing we get asked about a lot is whether you should use mulch or pine straw in your flower beds.

Both of these protect your plants from heat and cold damage, prevent weeds from breaching the soil, and help retain water during the summer. Mulch comes in different colors, while pine usually doesn’t.

One benefit of pine straw over mulch is that pine straw allows air to move through it easier, reducing compaction. Compaction can lead to root rot, which is typically caused by too much moisture without time for the soil to dry. This can kill the plant itself but can also lead to mold and other issues.

One way we combat this is the ingredients in our landscape mix. We include sand in our soil, which filters excess moisture and helps avoid fungus and other related issues. If you have any questions, we’d love to hear from you! Have a great weekend!
