Text overlay says mulch vs pine straw. Bullet points list pros and cons of mulch and pine straw.

One question we get sometimes is whether you should use mulch or pine straw for your landscape beds. Both protect your roots from heat, drought, and cold, as well as prevent weeds from breaching the soil. Mulch comes in different colors, unlike pine straw. You can get it in nuggets or shredded bark, which have their own benefits. Shredded bark spreads easily and stays in place, but breaks down faster than nuggets. The main benefit of using pine straw instead, is that if you have pine trees around, the falling pine needles will blend in.

Overall, the prices are about the same as well, which means there aren’t many differences. Whatever you choose will do the job for landscape beds. If you have a vegetable garden, you should avoid using bark mulch, as it depletes nitrogen from the soil.
