It’s cold out there, and it will be for the entire week! Many of our plants aren’t meant for freezing weather, although there are ways to protect them.
For your potted plants, we recommend bringing them inside your house or garage for warmth. If you can’t, try to group them together against a south-facing wall. Water then thoroughly, as wet soil takes longer to freeze than dry soil.
For plants or trees in the ground, water them as well. You can cover them with a breathable fabric or blanket, such as a frost cloth. If you use a non-breathable fabric, make sure to uncover them during the day to avoid damaging them from the greenhouse effect. You can also refresh your mulch, which helps insulate your roots.
After the freeze, make sure to bring your potted plants back outside to get direct sunlight. Look for any frost damage on your bedding plants, but don’t prune too quickly. Your plants will need time to recover from frost.
If you have any questions, let us know! We hope your families stay warm during our cold front.
