Our plant of the week is the Jane Japanese magnolia, which was a Louisiana Super plant last year. Right now is the perfect time to plant them, and they’re going to bloom through spring, giving you a lovely pop of color for your garden. Not only are they beautiful to look at, the pink/purple flowers have a sweet, fragrant smell.
Jane magnolias grow to about 15 feet tall and 10–15 feet wide, with multiple trunks and silver bark. They prefer full sun to partial shade and well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Water them during droughts through their first year after planting. You can trim them back to keep the branches tidy, and to limit the number of trunks to your preference (1-3 typically). Mulch helps keep the soil temperature controlled and moist, which helps promote healthier roots. If you have any questions or want plant suggestions, let us know!
