Plant of the week. Photo of dusty miller, a plant with silver leaves

Our plant of the week is Dusty miller, also known as Senecio cineraria. This is a cool-season foliage plant known for its bright, silvery leaves. Its neutral color makes it a great contrast to colorful fall flowers in your garden, and it can grow up to 24 inches tall and wide. Being both drought and frost-tolerant makes it a great choice for Northwest, LA.

Dusty miller prefers full sun, very well-drained, acidic soil, and occasional watering. You can grow them from seeds or stem cuttings easily, and they grow well in pots or beds. They’re easy to care for, as they don’t require pruning or fertilizer unless the soil quality is poor. If you choose to keep them in pots, water them more often than ones in the ground.
