A healthy lawn is the foundation for a beautiful outdoor area. Still, without the right watering practices and mowing techniques, even the most advanced fertilization and weed control efforts can fall short. Proper watering ensures that your grass receives the hydration it needs to absorb nutrients and sustain growth, while correct mowing helps to promote healthy root development and prevent weeds. Together, these practices not only complement our program’s efforts, but are essential in maintaining the overall well-being of your lawn. Let’s work together to create a stunning, outdoor space that thrives season after season.
Watering
One of the most common questions we get is “How long should I run my sprinklers?”, and unfortunately there just isn’t a blanket answer. Each lawn and sprinkler system is going to be unique. According to LSU Ag Center, lawns in this part of the state are generally going to require 1” of water per week (during peak season when it’s hottest you may need slightly more) to split over two watering sessions.
If you want the perfect amount in each zone, we offer a comprehensive audit of your sprinkler system. One of our techs will measure output in each zone, adjust and fine-tune all of your heads, fix any small problems, and set all of your timers. If you would rather do it yourself, we have included a rain gauge with instructions below on how to best use it.
- Place the rain gauge in the center of each zone
- Run your system for 15 minutes
- Check how much water is in the gauge
- Use the chart below to see how much time the zone needs to run per week
Mowing
Mowing your lawn at least once per week to the correct height during the growing season is essential for maintaining a visually appealing yard. This practice encourages thicker, healthier grass growth by stimulating the development of new blades, which in turn helps to crowd out weeds and reduce the space for them to grow. Regular mowing also ensures an even and uniform appearance across your lawn and allows for efficient photosynthesis, ensuring the grass has the energy it needs to grow resilient. Moreover, this mowing frequency and height helps prevent stress that can occur from removing too much of the grass blade at once, which can leave your lawn vulnerable to diseases and pests. Ultimately, a well-maintained lawn, cut regularly and at the right height, is more than just pleasing to the eye; it’s a vital practice for promoting a healthy, sustainable outdoor environment.
Fertilization
Our 6-step program focuses heavily on weed prevention and lawn fertilization. The goal is to prevent weeds using quality, well-timed pre-emergents. Next, there are two rounds of slow-release fertilizer to feed the lawn all summer long. Most products only feed for 30–60 days. Our blend lasts for 120 days. Once the weeds are prevented and the grass is growing strong, there is no need for expensive herbicides to kill weeds. The other applications also include insecticides for fire ant control and root-strengthening treatment for the winter months.
