If you look around town, you might notice grass starting to go dormant. This is the time of year when you can really tell if you have weeds or not, because the grass will be brownish, and the weeds will still be green.

If you are struggling with weeds, pre-emergent herbicides are the way to go. Instead of killing weeds after they’ve popped up in the yard, pre-emergents prevent weeds from germinating underground before they breach the soil. This works better, because once a weed has established itself in your yard, there’s a chance it will spread seeds and create more weeds. Once your yard is full of weeds, it’s a lot harder and more time-consuming to get rid of them.

We call this being proactive rather than reactive. If you do use pre-emergents, you’ll want to time them properly. They need to be applied to the lawn before the target weeds start to germinate. We apply pre-emergents for summer weeds in the spring, etc.

Our 6-step fert and weed control program includes pre-emergents, fertilizer, fire ant control, and root development throughout the year.
